FAQs

  • We hope that Hongkongers in the UK can participate in British public affairs proactively. Free and transparent information is a bedrock for any healthy and democratic society. We believe that when equipped with adequate information, Hongkongers can make decisions that best align with their principles in the upcoming general election.

Working with Hongkongers and organisations across the country, V4HK is committed to facilitate communication between members of the diaspora and local politicians. We strive to ensure Hongkongers’ voices are more effectively represented within UK politics, which in turn draw sustained attention on the human rights conditions in Hong Kong.

  • Hongkongers living in the UK and hold British Citizen, British National (Overseas), or Commonwealth (e.g. Australia, Canada) passports can vote in UK Parliament general elections. BN(O) visa holders without a BN(O) passport cannot vote in parliamentary elections, but may be eligible to vote in local council elections depending on the region.

  • Voting is everyone’s civic duty in a democracy. Additionally, participating in the democratic process is an indispensable part for recently arrived Hongkongers to integrate into British society and safeguard their rights and interests.

We implore everyone to cast their votes, even without a preferred candidate. While a single vote may seem trivial, collectively, they send a powerful message. By voting, Hongkongers will ensure that British politicians will take note of their collective demands and uphold their rights.

  • This campaign’s primary objective is to encourage Hongkongers to engage in the general election. Aside from urging candidates to continue supporting Hongkongers' pursuit of freedom and democracy and existing humanitarian support for hongkongers, we will also collate candidates’ views on such policies for voters to decide accordingly.

Through engaging with Hongkonger organisations and communities across the country, we are dedicated to encouraging Hongkonger voters to air their concerns and views actively. We will also compile a list of policy issues that are of the most pressing concern to Hongkongers in the UK, and convey them to political parties whose stances will be collated and compared.

  • Due to the limitations of our resources, we will focus on areas with a significant Hongkongers' presence. We will also prepare materials introducing the British political system to Hongkongers. All organisations are welcome to use them to organise events.

  • Our campaign will actively liaise with various political parties to highlight key issues within the Hong Kong community. We hope that Hongkongers better understand the position of each candidate and judge their merits critically.

  • Our campaign is currently supported by member organisations of our Advisory Board. We may consider raising the necessary funds at a later date through crowdfunding or other avenues.

  • Our campaign will commence in October 2023. In collaboration with various Hong Kong organisations, we strive to support their efforts in hosting events centred around the general election.

Our campaign can be split into three phases:

i: The initial phase will start in the fourth quarter of 2023. Partnering with Hongkonger organisations across the country, we will organise events introducing the British political system and the general election. We hope to encourage Hongkongers to register as voters and understand Hongkongers’ views on different issues.

ii: The second phase will start in the first quarter of 2024. Along with Hongkonger organisations in different areas in the UK, we will host engaging events with candidates from different parties. It can serve as a platform for Hongkongers to express their opinions directly and gain a clearer understanding of the views of those candidates.

iii: Our third stage will start a few months before the general election. We will invite candidates to respond and sign a policy pledge and encourage Hongkongers to support those who choose to abide by it.
